Eight
Late morning wind blasted the lodge, tearing at the shutters and howling down the chimney. Dragan had planned to go out to the plane to try the radio again, but if another storm was blowing in, the trek would probably be a waste of time.
Tessa’s hands cradled her coffee cup. Her lovely hazel eyes were wide in the firelight. She looked vulnerable, even a little scared. Dragan found himself imagining how satisfying it would be to sweep her off to his bed and pleasure her until thoughts of fear fled from her mind. But that idea was little more than a fantasy. There was no way Tessa would leave her little ones asleep in the chair, in a house full of dangers. And right now, she’d agreed to tell him her story. He’d be smart to take advantage while she was willing to talk.
“I’m listening,” he said. “Start anyplace you like.”
Tessa shifted on the couch and took a sip of her coffee. She stared into the flames, as if gathering her thoughts before she began.
“I already told you how Kevin, my fiancé, was killed. As I said, I didn’t even know I was pregnant until after the funeral. Weeks later, when I found out I was carrying twins...” She shook her head. “It was a shock, of course. But I was happy. I loved them from the first moment I knew they were there.
“I’d been working out of Anchorage for six years. I enjoyed my job. It paid well, and I knew I was going to need the insurance. I planned to work as long as I could, then take maternity leave and return afterward.”
“We do allow that,” Dragan said. “It’s company policy.”
“I know. That’s why I wasn’t expecting a problem. I’d planned to keep my pregnancy quiet until I was showing. But then the morning sickness set in. That was when my new supervisor started on me.”
“Your supervisor? Was that somebody I know?”
“Tom Roylance, Assistant V.P. of Sales and Contracts. Does it ring a bell?”
“Just barely.” As he thought about it, he remembered Roylance from a middle-management conference. Young Turk. Good-looking and overconfident. A climber of the sort who didn’t care who he crushed on his way up. From the way she said his name, Dragan had a feeling Tessa had been one of the unfortunate ones Tom had stepped on along the way. Dragan felt an urge to find the man and punch him in the nose.
“You say he started on you. Do you mean it was sexual harassment?”
“I wish!” Her laugh carried a bitter edge. “That would’ve made this lawsuit a piece of cake, wouldn’t it? No, he just became extremely critical. The man’s attitude was stuck in the 1800s. He kept mentioning, in front of others, how our Asian clients disliked doing business with a woman, and how they’d walk away before they’d sit down and negotiate with one who was pregnant. I proved him wrong over and over again, but that didn’t make any difference.
